Plan B

To our disappointment, the plan for filming at our friends party was a failure as the party did not turn out to be as good as we had anticipated. We had hoped that there would be a lot more chances to film people dancing and find a chance to film shots wanted for our video but elements such as lighting and the fact that no one was up for being film dancing to our dismay. Also the fact that people were accumulating outside rather than wanting to go inside the hall and dance, did not help, so we were left with no chance to obtain any ideal footage.

Instead of having filmed it at the actual party we had to change our plans about our shot lists. As a result of our failing to film in the party we are going to utilize areas on site at long road as we have "wasted" our out of college slot with the camera. We have a good area in the college where it looks and feels just like a village park. we would be able to shoot the scenes where we would have shooting town with the girl. in the area there are picnic benches that we will be able to use for the scenes where he is trying to convince her, where he is, in a sense, pleading with her to understand how he feels. If, for example, we had them both sitting on one of the benches, it could almost be as if they are having a conversation. Another option, to show the separation between the two, is that they could each be sitting on a different bench, where he could be singing the lyrics either to himself or to the camera. the video for dry your eyes by the streets is a perfect example for the shots we wish to include:

Other shots that we would like to include are certain shots where the camera is moving along with the performer, and also close ups of both the frustration of on his face and the close ups showing how unimpressed she is with what she is hearing. the majority of the shots will be filmed within the park area but also include shots within the cafe if possible, and any other places we can think of.

Spike Lee Influence

The way in which Spike Lee shoots his characters with the floating effect to show the character is in his or her own thoughts. This effect was in The Streets which was very effective to show his high state and his intoxicated state of mind at the time. we are definitely using this and would like to refer to Spike as an Influence for our video.
the close-ups of Mike Skinner's face are similar to how Spike films like 'Do the right thing' films the characters very closely to show their facial expressions and also detail of the face.

The Kooks - Naive

This song was very different to The Streets but again very inspirational to us as the genre of music is basically same. This means the video would have similar styles because they would share similar conventions of shots of the band playing and close ups of the instruments and the lead singer. There would also be great panning shots of the band which really gave us good ideas about what other shots would definitely have to include in order to remain close to the genre of music. This is because we have to really try and stick to certain guidelines but then again also branch out to reach our own inspirations and other genres to keep our video original and our own.

Influence in videos =]

The Streets - Blinded by the lights

In this video there are a lot of elements that we as a group believe we can try and emulate and adapt to our own video.
Firstly the Mise-en-scene includes the location (a club or party) the costumes (shirts, smart trousers and ties). These are elements we want to use and so when we saw the video for The Streets we thought that it was very influential as it helped us really piece together how we wanted our video to look.
Secondly the way in which it's filmed with the POV shots and slightly canted angles looked very original for a music video, which is why we experimented with test footage where 1 of us would place the camera in our palm facing ourselves (face framed to 1 side of the shot showing the background always changing but our person staying in the foreground).
Also there was great use of lighting and points where Mike Skinner is practically attached to the camera so he looks like he's floating (an effect used by Spike Lee in many of his movies).
The narrative is also very good because it tells us a story of how his night develops as he does various drugs and becomes intoxicated. He also stumbles across other sub plots like where he goes in the toilet to do drugs and in the other cubical there is a girl and a guy together who become involved in the story.
we were definitely inspired into using similar shots as this video and feel confident that our video will be in a similar genre as 'Blinded by the Lights'

This is a basic example of how the camera's we have available can be used in various ways to enhance our music video. In this short sequence the camera is used to show many different angles and shots. We can use the different shots and angles we have used in our final music video.

costume ideas

The ideas for costumes and overall look that the group has imagined for the music video would be a variation of looks, as there will be different uses of location, so a need for variable costumes are needed.

The picture of the group, (right), is the band who originally performed the song. their individual image is very casual and informal. they are seen in simple t-shirts and jeans. This is the sort of outfit that we use for the scenes where the singer is walking down the street singing into the camera. This would suit the visuals because the boy in the song would b having a tough time of it all so he wouldn't be wearing smart clothes.

For the scenes where the video is shot in the party, we would idealy wearing similar clothes to this type of shirt. this is because he would be more dressed up as he is in a club scenario where he is trying to get over the girl he loves by taking his mind off things by getting drunk. "wasted, face down of the floor".

altered idea.

due to recent developments we have decided to film some of our video at our friends party that is coming up this weekend. we have decided to do this as the lyrics in the song state "I'm wasted, face down on the floor". we could utilize this opportunity to make the most of the time we have to film. having footage of a party scenario would be very good to have as it would appeal to our target audience. we also still include footage in town with the walking down the street scenes.

Camera Allocation - Teacher Post

Make sure you discuss and plan your filming times now. You can start filming next week, assuming you have returned your signed camera loan letter.
Cameras can be used in your usual class blocks (just for that hour and a half), in addition groups can book out either one weekend (Fri 16.10 - Mon 9am) or two overnights during the week (excluding Friday night, for example Tuesday 16.10 to Thursday 9am).
There are around 60 music video groups and nowhere near 60 cameras! Book your camera slot as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Teacher Feedback

Your blog is looking great, it is giving a very clear picture of the mise en scene you are hoping to create in your video. The inclusion of a lot of videos that influence your idea is good, but do include some detail about what specific aspects of each video are influential, do some analysis of the videos as you will then be able to use this in your first piece of writing.
Keep putting in the good work.

shot list

the first shots we, as a group, decided to use would be long shots of the group as a band playing the music for the first 25 seconds of the song as there are no lyrics for this part of the song. Even though we would mainly use long shots for this section of the video, we would also include various shots and angles such as close ups, shots of individual band members.

When the lyrics come into the song the shots will change to the main lad walking down the street, the shot will be a close up, switching to medium close ups/side on landscaping shots. he will be directly singing the lyrics into the camera. when the particular lyrics, "pass me by" and "I'll be by your side", we picture the girl walking past him in the opposite direction, she will brush his shoulder and carry on walking away. at this point he will turn and cry the lyrics, "let go" and "you gotta lose control".

we got alot of our shot ideas from lemar's song "someone should tell you":

using similar over head shots, we would represent the lack of energy that the boy has after using everything to try to convince the girl that he loves her. "i'm wasted, face down on the floor".

Air Traffic: Shooting Star

This video is from a band named air traffic which are the same band who sing 'Charlotte' which is the song we wish to use for our music video project.
in this video a lot of it is in slow motion when the camera is on the couple.
however there is a contrast with the objects falling up and landing on the Air Traffic symbolizing shooting stars

Teacher Post- What your pitch should include

All groups must produce and present a pitch as an integral part of the planning stage. Your pitch is a proposal for your music video to the record company thinking of hiring you:
It must include:

* A clear written summary of the content/key idea for the video (at least 500 words).
The summary should include a reference to performers, locations, props, target audience for the video, reference to research conducted on the band, genre of the band and the song, relationship between the music and the visuals, relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, if the video will conform to or oppose the generic conventions of videos within that genre of music

* 2-4 (embedded) actual music videos which you think are similar to yours or that contain something that has influenced your idea (plus analysis, use Goodwin’s framework for analysing music videos)

* 2 (embedded) student videos which you think are similar (plus analysis)

* 4-6 Images which indicate location choices, overall mise en scene, costumes, props

If there is more than one group pitching for the same song, ensure you have a back-up choice and also try to make your pitch memorable.

initial ideas

one of our far fetched ideas is that we could film part of our video in Paris, as it is the city of love we think it would be ironic as the song we have chosen, "Charlotte", is is about a lads heartache over a girl who doesn't want him.

more realistically, there is a more simple and less expensive choice to stay within Cambridge and film the video there. we thought that utilizing some of the lyrics in the video could be very easy to do as they are very visual lyrics which can be presented with ease in our video.

the narrative of the song is that the lad is having a really rough time due to a girl who he is in love with. the problem is that she dos not feel the same way. from the lyrics we got the impression that the girl is either ignoring him and it is ruin his life. we came to this conclusion from certain lyrics such as "let go, you gotta lose control" and the idea of his life being ruined came from lyrics such as"i'm wasted, face down on the floor".

our initial ideas for the visual aspects would be very illustrative as they would show what the lyrics are describing. we imagine it to start with the boy walking the street, as he is doing so the girl walks past him and completely blanks, this refers to the lyrics,"i'll be by your side, each and everyday" this frustrates him as he shows this by turning and crying the lyrics to her, "let go you've gotta lose control". continuing into the song for the chorus we were imagining the video to be shot at a party environment, where he is just getting drunk and drowning his sorrows, "i'm wasted, face down on the floor, can't take anymore". Or another translation of those particular lyrics could be that he is "waasted" as in he is out of enrgy and effort as he is spending all his time trying to convince this girl that he loves her and that they should be together.

furthermore we were considering shooting it in hindsight where there will be shots of a band playing on a stage with flashbacks to the story/narrative.

this is the already existig video:

this, in comrparrison to our ideas, is not very illustrative.

lyrics for charlotte by air traffic.

Lyrics to Charlotte :

Don't cry
Just let it pass you by
I'll be by your side
Each and everyday

Let go
You gotta lose control
Teach you how to roll
Never be the same

oooh oooh oooh
oooh oooh oooh

Cause I'm wasted
I'm face down on the foor
Can't take anymore
I gave it all away
Lately I can't find the eyes
Help me realise
That I'm in love
I'm in love, I'm in love

Losing, I'm losing all my fame
And I can't stand the days
That I'm alone
Tell me do you feel the same
And are you glad I came
And can I walk you home?

oooh oooh oooh
oooh oooh oooh

Cause I'm wasted
I'm face down on the floor
Can't take anymore
I gave it all away
Lately I can't find the eyes
Help me realise
That I'm in love
I'm in love, I'm in love

Your face, my place
Your face, my place
Your face, my place at night.
